We can definitely fix at least one of those: the lack of transparency. For the other, the filter helps you find where you can charge for less.

The price per kilowatt-hour is set by the operator of the charging station, and our price follows it — down as well as up. When an operator lowers its price, that shows in ChargEV FleX just as an increase does. There is no single price for every site: each site has its own. Our share is in that price, and nowhere else.

DC up to €0.60/kWh: the filter and map prices together.

ChargEV FleX displays the price per kilowatt-hour at each site on the map. You can compare prices as you search, without opening every station individually.

Knowing the price up front is the difference between expensive and unpredictable — and unpredictable is the part that really stings. A high price you see beforehand is a decision. A price you only discover at the station is a surprise.

The price shown is the one that applies when you charge with ChargEV FleX and the one that appears on your invoice — not a “from” price for the cheapest charge point, not an average across all charge points, and no surcharge at payment. If the operator charges a session fee, it is shown separately and unchanged.

For that comparison to be useful, the displayed price needs to match what you are looking for. A low AC rate is of little use when you want to charge on DC.

Filter for your needs and charge for less

A site can have different prices for different charging types. Select DC and the map shows the corresponding DC rate. The filter determines both which sites appear and which price is displayed at each one. That is why a site’s map price can change when you switch between AC and DC.

Add a price limit of €0.60/kWh and the app narrows the displayed sites to that price range. You are now comparing offers for your chosen charging type within your price limit. Remember to account for other tariff components too, such as session or blocking fees.

Combine charging type, price limit and operator, then save them as a preset. Next time, you can return to “DC up to €0.60/kWh” with a single tap.

The price follows the operator through the day as well: for time-based tariffs, the station details show when it gets cheaper and when it gets more expensive, down to time windows as short as 15 minutes.

Because every price on the map matches your filter, you can compare sites directly — before you set off.

This lets you consider location, distance and price together.

Farther and cheaper, or closer and faster — your call.

Genau dafür fährt man hin.

Was in acht Jahren erwachsen geworden ist

One correction to my own memory first: it wasn’t the first ICNC. The conference website said “for the 7th time”, and what is now the charging industry’s flagship event started in 2012 as a small get-together for intercharge partners. Our first, though.

We stood out. chargEV T-shirts and jeans, suits and blazers all around. The T-shirts were just what we wore. We’d built an app after work and put it in the store. And now here we were among the big companies.

You might expect to be politely ignored in that crowd. The opposite happened. Nobody treated us as outsiders. People were open and curious, and we’re still in touch with some of them today. In 2018 the charging industry was still small enough that two people with a good app were interesting.

Felix and me at ICNC18 — the entire delegation we sent to Berlin back then.

That’s what you go for. Not just the talks, but the conversations afterwards — and above all the evening reception. The gin bar was already famous in 2018 and lived up to its reputation. It was back in Tempelhof. The queue had certainly scaled along with the industry.

A flashback to the nineties

This felt pretty familiar. In 1995, when the commercial internet was taking shape in Germany, much of it was just as improvised.

That was the year I started a company with a friend. In the same year, in the back room of an old post office in Frankfurt’s Gutleutviertel, three networks connected their lines and called the result DE-CIX — today the largest internet exchange in the world. Back then it had three participants.

We were in Frankfurt too, setting up our server. It was a close-knit crowd, and anyone willing to help was welcome. At some point I needed a change on the router. The administrator shouted the central Cisco’s enable password across the room, and I typed in the configuration. Not because I was authorised to, but because nobody thought to ask.

Today that’s unthinkable, and rightly so. Shouting an enable password across the room isn’t exactly an access control model that scales. Back then, everyone knew everyone. As the industry grew, operations had to grow up too.

What grew up in eight years

The numbers are stark. When we stood at Radialsystem in 2018, Germany had roughly 13,500 public charge points, and one percent of new cars were fully electric — about 36,000 vehicles for the whole year.

At the start of August 2026 there were 212,064 public charge points with 9.22 GW of connected capacity. And in August 2026 alone, 68,930 battery-electric cars were registered in a single month, a share of 32.4 percent. Nearly twice as many in one month as in all of 2018.

More telling than the numbers, though, is what people talk about. In 2018 the problem was finding a charging station at all and somehow getting it to start. That was the use case. That’s what we built our app for.

That problem is largely solved. At ICNC26 the subjects were availability, reliability, billing quality — and pricing. Utilisation was the metric charging networks were measured by, no longer the number of charge points. There were sessions on fraud prevention, accurate billing and roaming that works day to day.

If you run software in production, this all sounds pretty familiar. It has to work reliably, the billing has to be right, and it has to pay for itself. Welcome to operations.

What became of chargEV 3

Our app followed the same path. chargEV 3 was built for the world of 2018: find charge points, filter them, compare them. It was good at that job, and it’s still available for it.

Finding stations alone isn’t enough for us anymore. Charging and billing are part of the job now. That’s why chargEV v4 became ChargEV FleX, and we’re now an e-mobility provider (EMP) ourselves. That changes quite a lot of what has to happen behind the app.

What ICNC26 was about

For ICNC26 at Tempelhof airport, the organisers announced around 10,000 attendees on site and online and more than 130 speakers. From an arts centre on the Spree to an airport hangar: that gives you a pretty good picture of how much the industry has grown.

Much of the programme came down to one question: how do we make connected charging infrastructure work reliably day to day and pay for itself?

Economics. AMPECO CEO Orlin Radev put it as a choice of three in his keynote: reach scale, specialise defensibly — or plan an exit. Utilisation has become the metric acquisitions are judged by.

Fragmentation. Hubject CEO Christian Hahn named organisational fragmentation as the real obstacle to bidirectional and smart charging. Grid operators, energy traders, fleets and charge point operators all have to coordinate. That’s where things get stuck. My take: a clean API alone won’t solve that.

Price transparency. The AFIR rules require the price to be known before charging, broken down by component, and that roaming must not add cost simply because a session is settled across a border. A topic that concerns us directly.

OCPI 2.3.0. The new version adds national access point data, accessibility information, and optional modules for payment and booking.

Plug & Charge

Plug & Charge got the most promotion. For us, it goes all the way back to ICNC18.

Back then there was a session on the brand-new standard. Huge screen, diagram after diagram, trust relationships, PKI, certificate chains. The talk was so dense it was barely legible even at 4K. Eight years on, Plug & Charge has made its way into regulation:

chargecloud and Hubject announced a pilot for Plug & Charge on AC charging on the opening day, meaning workplace and car park charging. It still requires compatible hardware, compatible vehicles, and an EMP contract that supports Plug & Charge.

From 1 January 2027, public AC and DC charge points that are newly installed or renovated must meet EN ISO 15118-20:2022. Anyone offering automatic authentication has to support both ISO 15118-2 and -20. Existing points are not covered retroactively.

I’d like to take a closer look at how well the standard balances security, complexity and convenience. Someone has to implement and operate all that PKI and those certificate chains, after all. That deserves a post of its own.

And us?

We arrived in 2026 with four people instead of two, and this time our product could handle charging and billing as well as show stations on a map. The T-shirts got an update. They say ChargEV FleX now.

What hasn’t changed is the conversations around the programme. In 2018 they happened in the garden at Radialsystem; in 2026, at a wooden table under the hangar roof.

If we met there and still have something to follow up on, get in touch.

Was wir jetzt brauchen

Echte Erfahrungen.

If the operator charges its own session fee, we show it unchanged and without a markup.

What changed — and what did not

Exactly one line is gone: our own session fee. We have not touched the price per kilowatt-hour.

We still have costs per charging session. We just no longer allocate them to each individual session — we treat them as part of the running costs of the service as a whole.

Dropping the fee shows up most on small charging sessions: over a handful of kilowatt-hours, a modest fixed amount quickly turns into a substantial surcharge per kilowatt-hour.

The operators’ own fees

Some operators build their tariff differently: a lower price per kilowatt-hour, and a fixed amount per charging session in return. We can neither drop that fee nor fold it into the price per kilowatt-hour. It belongs to the tariff and has to stay visible when prices are compared.

A look at our German tariff data as of August 21, 2026: 3,978 of 50,652 locations charge such a fee — 7.9 percent. These locations also tend to have lower energy prices: the median is €0.412/kWh, compared with €0.550/kWh at locations without a session fee. Including the session fee, a 10 kWh charging session at 86 percent of these locations still costs less in total than the same session at the median energy price for locations without a session fee.

So an operator’s session fee is usually just a different tariff structure. That is why we show both separately instead of netting them out. That way the comparison stays possible before charging.

And whether it stays this way

We are running the model this way now and watching how it works out across real charging sessions. If we change something, we will announce it beforehand and explain it using the figures — as openly as today.

The short version

No session fee of our own. ChargEV FleX no longer adds a fee when a charging session starts.

At around 92 percent of German locations with a valid tariff, no session fee appears at all.

Operator fees unchanged. If the operator charges a fee per session, we pass it through unchanged.

Energy price unchanged. The change affects only our own session fee.

The full price is visible before charging. The energy price and any session fee are shown separately, so tariffs remain easy to compare.

Still no account, subscription or base fee.

What we need now

Real-world experience. If you are charging in the next few days anyway, give ChargEV FleX a try. Did charging work? Was the price clear? Was there anything that worked well, surprised you, or was confusing?

That feedback helps us more than any calculation on paper.

Was dich in ChargEV FleX erwartet:

Kein Account, kein Abo. App laden und loslegen.

Preis vorher checken.

Berlin. Back then I wrote that chargEV v4 was
feature-complete but not released yet, and that there were good reasons for it.

Since then: silence. For almost a year. That wasn’t by design — it was a
consequence of what we were working on. Time to clear it up.

The original plan

chargEV 4.0 was meant to be a new app replacing chargEV 3. Rewritten from
scratch with SwiftUI and modern frameworks, targeting iOS 17 and up. Not a
renovation of the old foundation, but a new one.

That was the plan, and that part happened exactly as intended.

The point where we changed course

We had already put the key question into words before Berlin:

What’s the point of seeing a good price if the app can’t start the session—or
you have to switch to a different provider on-site?

We could have shown you the price and sent you elsewhere. We didn’t want that. If
we want to actually solve the problem, we have to be able to start the charging
session ourselves. So we decided to become an EMP — an E-Mobility Provider — and
bring charging and payment directly into the app.

The app itself was largely complete. The larger undertaking was becoming an
e-mobility provider: contracts, roaming integrations, payment processing and
invoicing all had to become part of a reliable service. We decided to talk about
it once those pieces formed a product we could stand behind. That’s why it stayed
quiet for so long.

The new name

chargEV v4 became ChargEV FleX. For us, FleX is the EMP product — charging and
paying without being tied to a provider. Since that is now what sits inside the
app, the app carries the name.

Here’s what you get in ChargEV FleX:

No account, no subscription. Download the app and go.

Check the price first. On the map and in the station details, before you commit.

Pay with Apple Pay or your card. Right in the app.

A PDF invoice after every session. Automatically, with your billing details if you want them.

The map, the filters and the favorites you know from chargEV are all still there.
It is the same app lineage, after all.

Why not an update to chargEV 3?

This is the question I expect most, so let me answer it right here.

ChargEV FleX is not an update to chargEV 3 — it is a separate app in the App
Store. Two reasons:

First, it is technically a different app. The code was rewritten from the ground
up and requires iOS 17. Shipping it as an update would have cut off every device
that can’t get iOS 17.

Second, we did not want to force an immediate migration. Shipping ChargEV FleX as
an update would have replaced chargEV 3 on existing devices. Releasing it as a
separate app creates a transition period in which you can try ChargEV FleX and
move when you are ready.

New development is now focused on ChargEV FleX.

And the page you’re on right now

The launch also gave us the opportunity to update ev-freaks.com. The result is
cleaner, more modern, and closer to what EV Freaks stands for today.

Take a look

Everything about the new app, including screenshots and the download, is here:

A personal note from me: as CEO and CTO, I have worked closely on both sides of
this product — the app rewrite and the charging service behind it. Seeing those
two parts come together in ChargEV FleX means a great deal to me. If you try it,
I would genuinely like to hear what works for you — and what does not. Send your
feedback to chargev@ev-freaks.com.

Ganz genau.

(Been there, done that.)

Good question. And yes, there are some very good reasons. One of them is taking us to Berlin.

We’re attending ICNC25, the intercharge network conference hosted by Hubject. It brings together key players in the EV charging space to talk about the future of e-mobility, roaming, standards, and above all: user experience.

Which also happens to be what we’re all about.

A quick peek behind the scenes

Our goal with chargEV v4 is simple but ambitious: make ad-hoc charging as easy and transparent as possible.

The app already displays pricing data for many CPOs on the EVSE level—including roaming fees and tariff details, where available. It’s not exhaustive yet, but it’s a big step toward helping you make better, real-time charging decisions.

But: what’s the point of seeing a good price if the app can’t start the session—or you have to switch to a different provider on-site?

That’s the pain point we’ve been working on. At ICNC25, we’re not just going to network and get inspired—we’re there to validate where the industry stands and whether our approach hits the mark.

Teaser: More about chargEV v4 coming soon

We’ll soon share more details about what’s new in v4 — new features, UX improvements, and of course: when you can expect a release.

Until then, if you’re attending ICNC — come talk to us! We’re looking forward to great conversations and honest feedback.

chargEV v4 is feature-complete – so why haven’t we released it yet?
